Gastroenterology - specialist hospital care

Treatments and services

Diagnostic endoscopy

Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, colonoscopy and double-balloon endoscopy (enteroscopy), which can examine parts of the small intestine beyond the reach of standard scopes, for example in unexplained bleeding, iron-deficiency anaemia or suspected Crohn’s disease.

Endoscopic treatment of bleeding

Band ligation, sclerotherapy, haemoclips and argon laser treatment for bleeding from the stomach or intestines.

Treatment of narrowing

Balloon dilatation and stent placement for strictures of the stomach or intestines.

Endoscopic obesity treatment

Intragastric balloon placement during upper endoscopy, which may support weight loss alongside lifestyle changes; the balloon is removed after a set period.

Reflux diagnosis and treatment

Upper endoscopy, 24-hour pH monitoring and motility studies, followed by medication, endoscopic options such as the Stretta procedure and endoscopic fundoplication (for example Plicator or Gastrofix), or surgery.

Helicobacter pylori testing

Urea breath test and stool antigen testing to diagnose H. pylori infection and guide treatment.

Colorectal cancer screening

Screening colonoscopy with polypectomy, as polyps can be found and removed during the procedure; people at higher risk receive an individual screening plan.

ERCP

Endoscopic imaging of the bile and pancreatic ducts, which also allows stone removal, stent placement to relieve blockages and biopsy.

Haemorrhoid treatment

Medication for early stages and band ligation, sclerotherapy, laser or infrared treatment during sedated colonoscopy for intermediate stages, with referral for surgery in advanced cases.

Hepatology unit

Diagnosis and long-term follow-up of chronic hepatitis B and C using liver function tests, HBV and HCV PCR, abdominal ultrasound and liver biopsy, with antiviral treatment options including interferon.

Inflammatory bowel disease

Diagnosis of ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease by colonoscopy and/or double-balloon enteroscopy, and ongoing medical treatment.
