Audiology

Audiology covers the detailed assessment and rehabilitation of hearing and balance problems in babies, children and adults. The department at our partner hospital offers a broad range of hearing and vestibular tests, including objective tests suitable for infants and for people with dizziness. MedLuxLife helps families schedule tests at suitable times, explains preparation requirements in advance and arranges for results to be shared with your doctors at home.

Treatments and services

Newborn hearing screening

Screening of babies’ hearing using BERA so that possible hearing loss can be identified early.

Clinical BERA (ABR)

An objective electrophysiological test that measures the auditory nerve’s response to sound through electrodes placed on the head, used especially for infants who did not pass screening, babies with risk factors and children with speech delay who cannot complete other tests. It is also known as ABR, BAEP or BAER.

Clinical otoacoustic emissions and ASSR

TEOAE/DPOAE and auditory steady-state response testing, which can support and complement BERA findings.

Child audiometry

Age-appropriate hearing tests including behavioural observation audiometry, visual reinforcement audiometry and play audiometry, as well as free field testing.

Adult hearing evaluation

Pure-tone and speech audiometry, plus high-frequency audiometry where indicated.

Middle ear and Eustachian tube tests

Tympanometry and acoustic reflex testing, high-frequency (1000 Hz) tympanometry for babies up to six months, and Eustachian tube function testing.

Videonystagmography (VNG)

Records eye movements with video goggles during oculomotor, positional and caloric tests to help determine whether dizziness originates in the inner ear or the brain.

Video head impulse test (vHIT)

Assesses the vestibulo-ocular reflex of each semicircular canal separately.

VEMP test

Vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, used in the differential diagnosis of conditions such as semicircular canal dehiscence, early Meniere’s disease and otolith organ dysfunction.

Caloric and rotational testing

Caloric vestibular testing (ENG) and rotational examination to evaluate the function of each balance organ and central compensation.

Repositioning manoeuvres for BPPV

When benign paroxysmal positional vertigo is identified, corrective manoeuvres such as Epley, Vannucchi, Gufoni and BBQ roll may be performed.

Preparing a child for BERA

The test is usually done during natural sleep without medication, so babies are brought awake and fasted for feeding and sleep at the clinic; evening appointments, or testing under general anaesthesia with an anaesthetist at the family’s request, may be arranged.

Conditions that tests can help evaluate

  • Hearing loss in babies, children and adults
  • Speech and language delay with suspected hearing loss
  • Dizziness and balance disorders
  • Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Vestibular neuronitis
  • Internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO)
  • Balance problems after traumatic brain injury
  • Semicircular canal dehiscence
  • Meniere’s disease
  • Otolith organ-related vestibular dysfunction
